This poster was for the flatpack film festival in Birmingham. The film that was selected for myself to design for was the Top Knot Detective.
The flat pack film festival requested illustrative posters for a gallery next to the Mocking Jay Cinema. An A3 poster was required with the deadline one week prior to the festival, and the films were chosen at random; the film chosen for this project was Top Knot Detective.
Research began by studying the film - it was a mockumentary, that followed an old school detective samurai. Initial research began with developing a list of elements from the film using the trailer and the synopsis to develop an understanding of the movie. The film was abstract and so provided many avenues to explore.
The final idea came from using a few selected elements from the film’s abstract aesthetic. Combining these multiple elements together helped express the many varying themes of the film, within a simplified poster that did not give away too much about the film - as part of its appeal is the surprise and busyness - while still intriguing the audience.
